SOPA BOBA is an adventurous & audacious belgian∼dutch encounter between the director Jean Vangeebergen (zü Klub), the composer Pavel Tchikov (Ogives) and the singer G.W.Sok (The Ex, Oiseaux∼Tempête). This new creation with its soft & abrupt musicality forms a kind of oratorio from the present time which, in an assumed socio∼political context, develops a dramatic, neuralgic fable. The compositions are carried by rough modular synths, spoken word & a neoclassical string quartet…

• The first album of this concept is based on the eponymous text of the moldovan author Nicoleta Esinencu, its musical & narrative adaptation surprises first of all with its industrial sounds with synthetic scents ! So the stringed instruments come into action and then comes the narration which completes an astonishing, surprising, bewitching sound picture…

>>> The play (written in 2013) is based on a real event that took place in present∼day Moldova : a father cut off his child’s finger because the child stole money from his wallet. That moment is about money, career, politics and lies. Embracing scathing irony and sharp words, That Moment offers a scathing critique of consumer society & widespread corruption, insinuating itself into the family unit as well as the political sphere, going so far as to contaminate an entire country → Which country ? From East to West the news offers us the spoilt for choice <<<

• Through an atypical first work mixing the art of music and the art of theater through a powerful & moving psalmody SOPA BOBA builds around the texts an astonishing maelstrom of a post∼industrial avant∼garde → Here is a unique sonic experience which you will have to apprehend like a real discovery !

DEAD BOB is the solo incarnation of John Wright, drummer of long time and apparently legendary, but now retired, punk rock band NoMeansNo. «Life Like», a NMN cover actually, is the title track of the first album John has released on his own. Recorded & produced by himself in the wilds of British Columbia, this album’s material spans several decades and there is lots more in the archives. Though primarily written and performed by John he can’t take all the credit having engaged the help of several friends to get this thing done : Byron Slack (Invasives), Kristy Lee Audette (Rong), Ford Pier (Ford Pier and the Vengeance Trio, DOA, Roots Round up, Junior Gone Wild, Rheostatics), Selina Martin, his son Aidan Wright, as well as two old collabs with brother Rob in the writer’s chair…

• As might be expected the songs roll out cohesively but defy the cookie cutter pigeon holes, hence «Genre» is a tough one to convey but one thing that is not unclear is it is not to be listened to quietly >>> Play loud & enjoy → Then come see DEAD BOB all Live Like ! John has teamed with Ford, Byron, Kristy and good friend Colin MacRae (Pigment Vehicle) on electric bass guitar.

• Hailing from Malang, in eastern Java (indonesia), and currently based in Yogyakarta, composer and instrument builder Wukir Suryadi fuses ancient Javanese tradition with contemporary music practice. As a young theatre apprentice, Wukir began making music for plays and poetry recitals under the informal tutelage of WS Rendra and I Wayan Sadra. He also began building instruments, which led to a residency at Amsterdam’s esteemed Studio for Electro∼Instrumental Music so then in so many various & curious further adventures all around the world → Like the unique & extatic SENYAWA duo with Rully Shabara since 2010…

• QWANQWA’s debut US tour of 54 concerts in fall 2022 brought the poignant euphoric experience to storied jazz clubs, sticker slapped rock clubs, folk festivals, prestigious music institutions, street festivals, universities, and country opera houses, all the while unifying these audiences as they clap along “Music is Universal Language”. QwanQwa uncovers lesser known traditional sounds from east africa regions of ethiopia and beyond—a trance∼like chant of the eritrean tribe of Blen, a psychadelic somalian cover, an extended amhara wedding medley, a Mahmoud Ahmed sing∼a∼long…

• The ensemble was founded in 2012 by american violinist Kaethe Hostetter, who first worked in ethiopian music as a founding member of critically acclaimed Debo Band. Relocating to Addis Ababa in 2009, she participated in numerous exploratory and professional projects, immersing further into the culture of her surroundings. In this sense, QwanQwa, the amharic word for “language” is a project creating dialogues between cultures. Members are Endris Hassen (masinko), Kaethe Hostetter (violin), Bubu Teklemariam (bass krar), Selamnesh Zemene (voice), and Misale Legesse (kebero).
